Air conditioned porta potty: what to rent for a hot event

The single units with AC are built for job sites. For a wedding or a party in July, the cooled restroom is a trailer, and its AC needs the right power.

Is there an air conditioned porta potty?

There is, but rarely one you can rent for an event. A standard porta potty has no electricity, so it has no air conditioning. The two single air conditioned units we found are both built for job sites: one comes with a 28-day minimum and is not available for events, and the other is rated for 10 to 15 people over a 40-hour work week.

For an event, the air conditioned restroom is a restroom trailer. Every Restroom Ranch trailer has heat and air conditioning as standard, starting at $1,420 per event with delivery, setup and pickup included. The AC runs on two separate 120-volt, 20-amp circuits within 100 feet, and getting that power right is most of the planning.

The air conditioned units you can actually find

Single units, built for job sites. Texas Outhouse in Houston rents an air conditioned VIP unit with lights and timed sink faucets. Its page sets a 28-day minimum rental and says the unit is not available for event rentals.

CALLAHEAD in New York builds the HEADMASTER, a single unit with a 5,000 BTU air conditioner, a 1,500 watt heater and a 110-volt power connection. Its spec sheet recommends it for 10 to 15 people over an average 40-hour work week, the profile of a work crew.

Both need a power connection, and both companies are regional: Texas Outhouse works in the Houston area and CALLAHEAD in New York.

Restroom trailers, with AC as standard. Fixr’s national cost guide describes restroom trailers as coming with toilets, A/C and heat, sinks with hot and cold running water, and toilets that flush. That matches ours: private rooms with flushing porcelain toilets, a vanity with hot and cold water, lighting, heat and air conditioning.

Our flushable porta potty guide compares standard units, flushing units and trailers feature by feature, if you are weighing a sink or a flush as well.

What the air conditioning needs from your site

All four come from our trailer listings. Check them against the spot you have in mind.

1

Two separate 20-amp circuits

Each trailer runs on 120-volt, 20-amp power, and the listings ask for two circuits. Two outlets wired to the same breaker count as one circuit, so check the breaker panel, not just the wall.

2

Within 100 feet

The trailer plugs into standard outlets or 12-gauge extension cords. The listings ask for the power, and a water source, within 100 feet of where the trailer stands.

3

No 50-amp circuit in summer

The listings give the 50-amp circuit to the winter heat package and run the trailer itself on the 20-amp circuits. The 5-Station listing names them as the circuits for lights and AC.

4

Power that is on at delivery

We connect the trailer when we set it up, before your first guest arrives. The circuits need to be live then, not when the caterer or the band turns up.

What to tell us when you book a summer date

Everything we ask for any event, plus where the power comes from. With these, the quote comes back accurate instead of provisional.

  • Where the outlets are, how far they are from the spot, and whether they sit on separate breakers
  • Whether the power is shared with a caterer, a band or lighting, especially on a generator
  • The spot itself: firm, level ground, about five feet of clearance, nothing overhead
  • The guest count and the hours, so we can size the trailer

If the site has no power at all, say so when you book. A site without outlets needs a generator that can supply both circuits, and we would rather sort that out on the phone than on the day.

Heat can change the size you need, too. The usage notes from PolyJohn, a portable restroom manufacturer, say weather and what guests eat and drink, alcohol included, can raise restroom use by 30 to 40 percent. If a July event sits near the top of a trailer’s range, move up a size.

How much is an air conditioned porta potty?

For an event, it means the price of a restroom trailer. Ours start at $1,420 per event for the 2-Station, $1,749 for the 3-Station, which serves up to 225 guests, and $2,199 for the 5-Station, which serves up to 300. Air conditioning is a listed feature on all three, and none of the listings prices it as an add-on. Delivery, setup and pickup are included.

Fixr’s national range for a restroom trailer is $900 to $3,000 a weekend. Our guide to what a restroom trailer rental costs explains what moves a quote, and how many restrooms you need covers which size fits your guest list. Planning for December instead of July? Questions people ask next

Do porta potties have air conditioning?

A standard porta potty does not, because it has no electricity. A few companies build single air conditioned units, and the two we found are made for job sites: one has a 28-day minimum and is not available for events. For an event, the air conditioned option is a restroom trailer.

What power does an air conditioned restroom trailer need?

Ours need two separate 120-volt, 20-amp circuits within 100 feet, through standard outlets or 12-gauge extension cords. Two outlets on the same breaker count as one circuit. The 50-amp circuit on our listings is only for the winter heat package.

What if the event site has no power?

Tell us when you book. A site without outlets needs a generator that can supply both 20-amp circuits for the length of the event, and we will confirm what works for your site before the quote is final.

Does the air conditioning cost extra?

No. Heat and air conditioning are listed features on all three Restroom Ranch trailers, and none of the listings prices AC as an add-on. The quote depends on the trailer size, the date, how long you need it and where the event is.

Do you rent single air conditioned porta potties?

No. For restrooms, we rent trailers only, in 2-, 3- and 5-station sizes. Every one has heat, air conditioning, flushing porcelain toilets and sinks with hot and cold water.
